Larry has caught the bug…
I met Larry when he came into the Buffalo Obama HQ before the Feb. 5th primary to volunteer. He was young, enthusiastic and willing to do whatever it took to make sure that Obama was the Democratic nominee. Living in the University Heights neighborhood of Buffalo he saw the potential of this campaign throughout the City of Buffalo. Larry is a middle school psychologist with a progressive political outlook.
After the Primary I sensed that he wanted to stay involved and when I asked if anyone was interested in running for Committeeperson spots in the County Larry stepped up. This is part of an email that he just sent to me about his race:
“Hi Diana,
I am excited to tell you that I was elected as a Committee Member for University 3, this past Tuesday. Without the inspiration of Barack Obama and your active involvement in the local campaign, I know that I wouldn’t be emailing you with this exciting news. I have you to thank for encouraging me to run for the position.
Here’s a little of my campaign experience that I’m so proud to share…
Leading up to the primary day, I learned that I would be the last name on the ballot. The other candidate, who I had petitioned with, happened to appear on another petition with a third candidate. He chose to run with the other candidate, leaving my name as the very last on the ballot. Knowing that the odds were against me, I decided to do some active campaigning. My wife’s aunt, who works for a printing place, made me some great cards and signs. On the Saturday before primary day, my wife and I went door to door, handing out cards and talking to voters. The residents were so receptive to us and it was an amazing experience! Violence on UB South Campus and excessive partying of UB students seemed to be a common concern. After going door to door, we then posted signs throughout the area and nearby the polling station (of course 100 feet away).
On primary night, we attended a University Heights Block Club meeting with UB security and Buffalo Police, which we were invited to by one of the voters. After the meeting, we anxiously headed to the polling station to see the results first hand. To my surprise, I finished second by ONE vote! I was thrilled!”
I am excited that he took the first step and I believe that Larry’s spirit and enthusiasm will keep him moving forward with the right attitude. Go Larry!!!
